Japan is a warm and welcoming country, there are a few things every traveler should know before arriving. These simple tips will help you feel confident and make the most of your experience.

1. Carry Cash

Japan is becoming more card-friendly, but many smaller shops, restaurants, and even temples still only accept cash. Keep some Japanese yen with you at all times, especially outside major cities.

2. Take Off Your Shoes

In many traditional places—like homes, ryokan inns, certain restaurants, and temples—you’ll be expected to remove your shoes. Wearing clean, hole-free socks is a good idea!

3. Dispose of Trash Mindfully

Japan is known for its cleanliness, but oddly enough, public trash bins are rare. You’ll often need to carry your garbage with you until you find a bin—usually near vending machines or convenience stores.

4. Be Punctual

Punctuality is a big part of Japanese culture. Trains and buses leave on time, and being even a few minutes late for a booking or tour can be seen as rude. Always plan to arrive a little early ensuring you don't miss out.

5. Use a Translation App

While Japan is increasingly tourist-friendly, English isn’t widely spoken in every region. A translation app like Google Translate or Papago can help you with menus, signs, and conversations. Your journey through Japan will be smoother and much more enjoyable!
